Edinburgh Women’s Aid’s recent decision to exclude trans women and non-binary individuals from key services has sparked serious concern among advocates for survivors of domestic abuse. This policy change is a betrayal of inclusion, and we are calling for urgent action to ensure all women, regardless of identity, have access to the support they need.
In response, we have contacted Scottish Women’s Aid, Edinburgh Women’s Aid, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Scottish National Party, LGBT Youth Scotland, and The Care Inspectorate to raise complaints and demand accountability. The exclusion of trans women from life-saving services is not only deeply unethical but also raises serious legal and human rights concerns.
“This policy is unacceptable. No woman should be turned away from support, especially in times of crisis,”.
“We are pushing for immediate clarification on how this decision aligns with equality legislation and urging leadership to reconsider this harmful move.”
Edinburgh Women’s Aid must face scrutiny for this decision, and we are committed to ensuring transparency in their policies. Women’s services exist to provide refuge, not exclusion. We will continue to challenge this policy and hold those responsible to account. We encourage others to speak out, contact their representatives, and support organisations that remain committed to all women.
