Nottingham Gym Press Release

We have formally raised concerns over a Nottingham city centre gym’s unlawful exclusion of transgender women from its women-only facilities, highlighting a clear breach of the Equality Act 2010.

The gym’s current policy states that these spaces are “reserved for biological females only,” a stance that directly discriminates against transgender women. The Equality Act explicitly protects trans people from such exclusion, and blanket policies like this fail to meet the legal threshold of a legitimate and proportionate restriction. After being contacted, the gym has confirmed that they are now seeking legal guidance to bring their policies in line with the law.

TACC welcomes this step but urges them to ensure that any updates fully comply with anti-discrimination protections and best practices for inclusivity.

A spokesperson for the gym has stated:

“We’re encouraged that the gym is reviewing its policy, but the law is clear, transgender women have the right to access women-only spaces unless a legitimate, proportionate justification is provided. Blanket bans are unlawful, and we will continue to push for compliance with equality legislation.”

We will be monitoring the situation closely and we remain committed to ensuring that trans rights are upheld across all sectors.
